Key Checks as you Test date nears. This week I am focussing on Key checks to do one month, one week and the day before your test!
One Month away from Test: Firstly, as soon as you get the test date, advise your instructor, so you can check their car is available (if you are using their car) for the test. Always double check the date and time! (I had a pupil once who arrived one month before their actual test!)
With a few weeks to go, be sure to check your licence, plus Tax/Insurance/NCT certs are all up to date and not expiring soon. Remember, there is no lee-way with testers on this. You simply will have your test cancelled on the spot. Check your car for any engine management lights on the dash. Generally (in my experience) a test will not be conducted if there is an engine management light on. Also, check all lights are in working order (Signals and Brake lights MUST be working, other lights not working will not lead to the test being cancelled). Definitely do a lesson, one month out! This way, if you have any bad habits or gotten rusty, you will have time to fix them. Finally, plan time off at work/college if necessary.
One Week away from Test: Ensure you have studied the rules of road questions, road signs, hand signals, engine checks and internal car controls. (Your instructor should have shown you all these – or check out my video course at www.brendantierneyschoolofmotoring.com). Do not leave it til the last minute to study these as it can add to the panic. Again, do a lesson, or at least practice if you have access to a car. Focus on recurring mistakes.
The Day before your Test: Again, check all those signal and brake lights are working. Whilst all lights should be working, if any of these (signal/brake) aren’t working the test will be cancelled. I also often advise pupils to do some visualization (ie. What if I conk out, what will I do tomorrow etc). Ensure you prep everything for the morning. Fuel, Windscreen wash etc. also, a drink for yourself.
